SAINT STANISLAUS

St. Stanislaus (1030-1079)
Feast Day:  April 11
Patron Saint of:  Poland

Born to a knight who prayed earnestly for a child,  Stanislaus was well-educated and much-loved.  After he was ordained a priest he became famous for his preaching.  He was an energetic champion of justice and of the poor.  As bishop of Cracow his good example inspired reform of the clergy and spiritual renewal among the people.

However, the king (“Boleslaus the Cruel”) was both depraved and unjust.  When the king kidnapped the beautiful wife of a nobleman for his own lust, Stanislaus was the only one courageous enough to speak out.  The king ordered his guards to kill him, but they refused, so great was their admiration for Stanislaus.  Enraged, the king himself killed Stanislaus while he was saying Mass, hacking him to death at the altar.
